to go home.

When one thinks of living a 'lovely life', it obviously can mean many things. As far as we are concerned at ALU, living a lovely life can mean everything from how you dress yourself, the way you prepare a meal to how you style your bedroom. Ideally, living this type of life means to stop and appreciate the details. Life is full of moments (good & bad), not one giant answer. And while that may sound like it should be on a decal in a new baby's nursery or on an optimistic freshman college dorm wall, it's just simply a sweet and realistic fact.

One huge way you can live a lovely life is by the way you dress your home. After all, your home is where you lay your head at night and where you rise to start your day. If you're anything like me, your home is your sanctuary. A place that reflects who you are, even when you're not in it. A Lovely Universe may just be 300 sq ft. but I do hope the shop gives off a cozy vibe, filled with sweet things week after week that you would love to bring back to your precious home.

Some simple tips for creating and maintaining a lovely home:
  • Floral Moments - Fresh, or even good quality synthetic, flowers in jars, vases and recycled clear bottles don't cost a lot and they act as a refreshing visual for a room
  • Sleep Pretty - Switch up your duvet once a year! This may seem luxurious or completely unnecessary - and maybe it is- but it truly changes up a room without hurting your wallet. If you could afford fancy duvets then great, but places like Target, Home Goods, Overstock and Urban Outfitters have so many wonderful options that don't even go over $75
  • Scent - This one is obvious! Every new season, stock up on new candles. Walking into a newly scented room truly does something for your psyche, I swear. For the Fall/Winter seasons, we are carrying a new line of candles called Brooklyn Candle Studio that you will have to check out!
  • "Hostess with the Mostess"- There's nothing worse than going somewhere and feeling unwelcome, even if it's your own home. I think keeping your home comfortable for not only anyone who stops in to visit, but for yourself as well, is so important. This means keeping things neat, clean and welcoming daily. Stocking up on good soaps, fresh towels, nice coffee/tea, clean dishes, go-to foods on hand as if someone was coming over makes coming home after work even easier.
  • Light Up - Lighting is usually the first thing I notice when I walk into a store, but it's especially important in a home. I love cozy low lights for night time and bright clean lights for a kitchen. Scour flea markets for antique chandeliers or affordable new pieces from your favorite home decor stores (lighting often goes on sale atleast once a season)   One standout floorlamp or pendant can truly change a room and quite literally light up your home.
  • Quality over Quantity - We're all busy, no one really has the time to obsess over a neat home everyday, but if its important to you - you make time for it. A clear home means a clear head. Even if it means promising that you won't go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink or doing a quick wipe down of your kitchen every morning. An easy way to weed out daily time spent on organizing is just to keep items of quality around and cut out the clutter. PS: You can find useful but also charming household items and gifts here at ALU but you may already know that ;)
Clearly, Pinterest is an excellent source for daydreaming of any kind but especially of the home decor persuasion. My apartment at home may be teeny tiny but I love any design inspiration that I can get. All images are found on +Pinterest :)
