small business saturday!
10:59 AM
If you're reading this, chances are you most likely shop small more than once a year. if not, how come?
In a world with so many big name, mass produced options being thrown at us all year long (especially around the holidays) with all of their profits going to companies that already have billions - why not portion out a atleast section of your shopping budget to smaller companies? We are all human and even I succumb to shopping big (ie: ASOS, Whole Foods, Target, H&M, Anthro, etc.) not only due to convenience but also because even the biggest companies employ thousands upon thousands of people who need jobs, work hard and keep our economy afloat.
I am lucky to live in an area (and a time) where shopping small is part of the norm. In NYC and Brooklyn, many people already make it a point to spend money within the community which in return ensures that independently owned neighborhood businesses are kept alive. But it's still super hard to keep this shop afloat at times. This is not a complaint, it's a reality that all small business owners face at one point or another.
Brooklyn has seen such growth over the past 10+ years which has been awesome but also a bit hurtful in specific cases. Rents continue to rise and some people and small businesses are pushed out to make room for high rises, big name brands who can afford the commercial rents. Areas begin to lose their character and that character is something that needs to be preserved.
Boerum Hill is certainly one of those neighborhoods that has changed a lot with the growth in Brooklyn but the people who live here (and have been here for 20+ years) yearn for mom & pop stores, restaurants and services to keep their neighborhood's feel thriving. We cater to the community and spend money in the community rather than profit here and send the money elsewhere.
Show your support by shopping small regularly but especially on Saturday November 29th which is American Express' Small Business Saturday. We will be giving out free tote bags, stickers, pamphlets and pins with each purchase from 10am-5pm. Be sure to use your American Express card to receive rewards for shopping small.
