real style.

One of the best parts of working at A Lovely Universe is the conversation of styling. How to wear something, where to wear it, why wear it, etc. These are daily conversations in the shop that are so fun and interesting to have with women. The pieces that are sold at ALU are aimed at being special, timeless and realistic. We all have places to go, people to see, work to do. You need an outfit that can keep up with you and not a $400+ asymmetrical frock that you wear twice a year and pay off for months on your credit card..although if you're also into that, that rules too!
What getting dressed is all about is how you want to express yourself, what suits you and what you feel like wearing that day, isn't it? It's good to strive to free your mind from the 'fashion noise' that occurs from time to time and go with your gut. Leave the idea of trends at the door and embrace your taste. You know best, although a little helping hand from your local shop girls or trusted pals never hurts. This is the golden rule at A Lovely Universe and something (and basically the only thing) that I always push when my shoppers and I are discussing styling ideas or comfort factor in a specific outfit.
If you've ever been in the shop, you know that the clothes we stock are totally feminine and wearable but the idea of contrast is always 'pushed'. Women of all ages, shapes and sizes with varying looks and approaches are regulars. Take a piece from ALU and make it your own. "Dress it up, dress it down". Throw it on with boots and a leather jacket to toughen it up. Tuck it into jeans & pair with an army jacket. Add a red lip. Wavy messy hair paired with a more elegant dress. Wear a zshushy statement necklace with a denim jacket and a flannel. These are the ways to take one item and push it further for more usage and versatility.
One of my favorite ways to get inspiration for styling & buying ideas is to look at it from an approachable, wearable, realistic (but still motivating) sense. What is everyone wearing? How are they wearing it and why? This is where street (and subway!) style comes in.
I have a chosen list of specific celebrities, designers, muses, etc. that get paparazzied (sorry!) or show up at events that I love to watch. Not only that, living in a place like NYC, the street style inspiration is endless which makes buying decisions for ALU even more fun.
So far for fall, these snapshots really caught my eye and made me feel excited to look around the store and re-create these looks for my customers! I hope you enjoy them too.
